Something that you can't see, taste, or touch but it's quickly becoming one of the biggest health threats to families in this country.
The reason our indoor air is such a problem today is we have become so energy efficient. Our homes are sealed up tight-saving on energy, but creating an environment of indoor pollution. Now we all know how dangerous polluted outdoor air can be, but according to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) indoor air is 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air! As a society, we are seeing an increase in the number of people with allergies and asthma.
Ugly Indoor Air Facts:
- Indoor pollutants are 1000 times more likely to reach your lungs than outdoor pollutants.
- Many homes have 25 to 100 times more pollutants in them than polluted outdoor air.
- We spend 90% of our time indoors.
Believe it or not, the most commonly found particles indoors come from people.
These particles consist of microscopic skin flakes which we all shed at rates of between several hundred thousand and millions per minute, depending on our level of activity.
If pets are present, dander flakes from dogs or cats or birds may join the mix, and if mold growth is present, elevated numbers of spores may also be present in the air. Add to this , microscopic lint fibers from clothing and paper pollutants, pollen, bacteria, and viruses.
All of which promote poor indoor air quality.
Eventually, most of these airborne particles, settle out, some in minutes and some in hours, to become what we call house dust which filters through carpet, upholstery, and draperies. But, when those filters become too full the particles begin to re-circulate through the air we breathe.
